  • review and approval periods;
  • information from other parties;

Design management is strongest when cost, procurement and construction insight inform decisions early. The team should understand how geometry, repetition, material selection, access, tolerances, sequence and specialist availability affect delivery.

This does not mean flattening the design. It allows the design team to focus ambition where it creates the greatest value and resolve complexity deliberately.

Plan the contractor and specialist transition

When a contractor or specialist supplier joins, responsibilities often shift. Portions of the design may require development, fabrication information, samples or performance verification.

The design manager should map this transition before award. Tender documents must state the expected design obligation, submission process, review periods and relationship with the consultant’s design intent.
